Sustainable development governance
We apply a governance framework that defines the processes and controls used to manage sustainability‑related risks and opportunities across our business. This framework integrates environmental and social considerations into our strategy, planning and decision making.
Our governance structure supports effective oversight of:
- Climate‑related risks.
- Mitigation and conservation actions related to nature‑related risks, impacts, dependencies and opportunities.
- The safety, health and security of our workforce and neighboring communities.
- Actions to attract and retain a world‑class workforce.
Oversight is exercised by the Board of Directors, principally through the Public Policy and Sustainability Committee (PPSC), and by the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), embedding sustainability considerations into decision making over the near, medium and long-term. Senior management and internal subject matter experts provide input through the process of identifying, assessing, prioritizing and tracking sustainability‑related risks and opportunities that inform board and ELT oversight. The company’s corporate governance framework is addressed in the Proxy Statement.
As we work to responsibly meet global energy demand while delivering competitive returns and pursuing our emissions reduction targets, we use a combination of strategic planning processes and risk management tools to evaluate sustainability‑related risks and trends. Our approach includes continuous improvement and internal assurance to support disciplined, transparent governance.
The graphic to the left illustrates the interrelated nature of our sustainability oversight.
