Christian Byrd is a fourth-grade math teacher at Mary Burks Marek Elementary in Alvin Independent School District. She joined Alvin ISD in November 2012 as an intervention paraprofessional, supporting math intervention groups using the Do the Math curriculum. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Houston and obtaining her EC–6 Generalist certification, she taught third-grade English language arts and social studies before moving into math. Over the years, she has taught all core content areas in both third and fourth grade, ultimately returning to her first love—mathematics—in her current role.

In the classroom, Byrd is known for her data-driven, small-group instructional model, strong routines, and engaging learning experiences that build students’ confidence and enjoyment of math. She founded and leads Girl Talk, one of Marek’s largest after-school clubs, which supports the social-emotional growth of fourth- and fifth-grade girls through monthly discussions and hands-on activities. Recognized for her warm, transparent communication with families and dedication beyond the school day, she views being an educator as a lifelong dream and is deeply committed to helping students grow as learners and as people.
