Surmont’s tipi: symbol of Indigenous tradition
Originally raised in June 2021 to mark National Indigenous History Month in Canada, this tipi (also tepee or teepee) stands at ConocoPhillips’ Surmont oil sands asset in the Athabasca region of northeastern Alberta. Surmont is located in the traditional and ancestral territory of the Alberta Treaty 8 territories of the Dene, Dene-zaa and Cree people, and the Métis people of Alberta.
