In the Fall of 2002, following the merger of Conoco and Phillips Petroleum Co., ConocoPhillips became the world’s fifth largest integrated oil and gas company. Among its first actions, the company established a value statement, using the acronym SPIRIT for Safety, People, Integrity, Responsibility, Innovation and Teamwork.

The new ConocoPhillips logo featured a design element known as The Mark, representing a mark of excellence, and symbolizing a commitment to continuously reach higher levels of performance and innovation.

To recognize outstanding performance by project teams and individuals, the company launched the SPIRIT of Performance Awards.

Over two decades, the SPIRIT Awards have thrived through market ups and downs, mergers, acquisitions, and the 2012 split that transformed ConocoPhillips into the world’s largest independent exploration & production company.

Thousands of employees and contractors have been honored for outstanding performance, saving lives, championing innovation, and lifting up their communities.

When practical, the company celebrates SPIRIT Award honorees in person at events featuring and hosted by musicians, magicians, and once a moon-walking Apollo 12 astronaut.

Since 2013, ConocoPhillips SPIRIT of Performance Award teams and individual award recipients receive a red crystal representation of the company's logo mark on a black crystal base.
SPIRIT Award winners are proudly featured in the company’s former magazine and this digital publication, spiritnow.

In 2022, as the tradition enters its third decade, 11 teams and 15 individuals were selected to receive the coveted SPIRIT Award.

In a video announcing the winners, Chairman & CEO Ryan Lance said, “The heroic efforts of these winning teams and individuals — and indeed the hard work of all our colleagues — contribute to our success and help make us who we are.”
