On June 24, Surmont achieved a historic milestone: the production of 500 million barrels of oil.

“Congratulations to all on achieving this remarkable milestone,” said ConocoPhillips Canada President Nick McKenna. “Safely producing 500 million barrels from Surmont is an incredible accomplishment. My deepest thanks to all involved throughout Surmont’s history and those working and supporting the asset today.”

Surmont, a steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) facility located about 55 kilometers south of Fort McMurray, Alberta, is currently configured to produce Surmont Heavy Dilbit, which is bitumen diluted with condensate.

Operations include two central processing facilities for treatment and blending of bitumen. Surmont is a 100 percent working interest asset that offers sustained, long-life production.

Over decades, Surmont's story is one of continual progress, as outlined below.
1997: The pilot project

Surmont’s beginnings go back to 1997 with the construction of a SAGD facility, a pilot project that laid the groundwork for the asset. Through these initial efforts, ConocoPhillips gained valuable insights, guiding the development of larger-scale projects in the years to come.

2007: Commercial production at Surmont 1

Ten years after the pilot project, 2007 marked the beginning of commercial production at Surmont 1. This milestone was a significant step forward, highlighting the potential of SAGD technology to unlock the vast resources of the oil sands.

2010: Construction of Surmont 2

With the success of Surmont 1, construction began on Surmont 2 in 2010. Designed to expand production capacity, this project solidified Surmont’s position as a key asset in ConocoPhillips’ portfolio.

2015: First production at Surmont 2

In 2015, Surmont 2 achieved first production, marking a major milestone in the asset’s history.

2023: Full ownership

In 2023, ConocoPhillips completed the purchase of the remaining 50% interest in Surmont, gaining full ownership of the asset. Read more.

2025: 500 million barrels

The culmination of years of hard work, innovation and strategic investments saw Surmont achieve a milestone of 500 million barrels of production. This achievement reflects not only the technical capabilities of the asset but also the dedication and expertise of the teams who have supported it over the years.
