ConocoPhillips aims for sustainability excellence

With the recent publication of the 2020 Sustainability Report, ConocoPhillips confirmed its commitment to ESG (environmental, social and governance) excellence as a core strategic principle.

Beginning with messages from Chairman & CEO Ryan Lance and the ConocoPhillips Board of Directors, the report highlights the company’s efforts to lead the energy sector through disciplined capital allocation, strong financial performance and ESG excellence. Performance examples and metrics describe the ongoing progress ConocoPhillips is making toward meeting its ESG priorities as well as how the company maintained operational safety and successfully ran its business during the global pandemic.

Since the last update, several new stories focused on innovative strategies to reduce emissions and mitigate impacts to biodiversity have been published.

Understanding the biodiversity near ConocoPhillips operations is key to managing and mitigating impacts. Studying Our Impact on Alaska’s Goose Population provides details on a multi-year study of potential effects on the Greater White-fronted Goose, an indicator species for the CD-5 area in the northeast National Petroleum Reserve Alaska.

Detecting and repairing methane leaks is a critical component of ConocoPhillips’ effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate methane emissions. Building a Technology Toolkit for Methane Emissions Detection describes the variety of tools and techniques ConocoPhillips employs to detect and repair leaks with solutions best suited to each of its sites.

Prominent among the tools are the new SOOFIE sensors named for one of the company’s own remote sensing experts Khalid Soofi.

Biodiversity beneath the sea is the focus of Surveying the Norwegian Seabed. To identify sensitive species habitats prior to drilling two new offshore exploration wells, ConocoPhillips conducted environmental and habitat assessment surveys of the seabed fauna. The resulting scientific information allowed the company to avoid impacting coral gardens and habitats.
