Educating, encouraging and empowering all employees to improve their well-being through physical activity, nutrition and awareness is a priority for us. So, too, is providing a safe workplace.

Know Your Numbers

Our investment in and attention to employee health and wellness is significant. We commit both time and resources to promote and support good nutrition, physical activity, stress management and other health improvements to employees and contractors. One recent campaign - "Know Your Numbers" - offered employees a voluntary and confidential effort designed to help identify key health indicators including cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI).

"For employees whose numbers indicate good overall health, this information validates that what they're doing is working. Additionally, numerous employees have been able to identify and change their risk factors through these screenings," said Dr. Paul Hodgins, general manager, ConocoPhillips Health Services.

Education, Prevention and Healthy Competition

"We're committed to reaching employees to educate them on the importance of diet and lifestyle in maintaining overall health and preventing chronic diseases," added Hodgins.

A team of professionals and local wellness volunteers work together to offer programs, tools, information and incentives to support simple lifestyle changes that maintain or improve employee health. Fun and engaging activities or even friendly competitions between business groups illustrate the commitment to making global health and wellness a top priority.

Wellness Around the World

We support a variety of employee health and wellness events around the world, including:

  • Wellness Centers.
  • Farmers Markets.
  • Physical activity, nutrition and behavioral health challenges.
  • Heart health and fitness presentations and other wellness activities.

Keeping our global workforce healthy is challenging, particularly in remote climates in far-reaching corners of the globe. We have four regional medical directors who oversee the health and wellness of the company's worldwide workforce, each addressing the unique environments and needs of employees.

"Those in remote assets are generally staffed by physician assistants (PAs), nurse practitioners (NPs) or medics trained in trauma response. To support our medical staff, we contract with local physicians. We also use telemedicine in difficult-to-access areas such as offshore Norway, Indonesia and the North Slope of Alaska," he added.

A physician in Stavanger, Norway, can read an EKG, talk to the patient about 200 miles offshore on the Ekofisk platform, and use such diagnostic tools as cardiac ultrasound using a video conferencing connection. The Houston-based Health Services team also works with regional medical staff to ensure health care is accessible when employees arrive in areas under development, such as Angola.

"It's our responsibility to make sure our people are safe at work, that they're protected from exposures and that they're capable of safely performing their jobs," said Hodgins.
