Safety

ConocoPhillips Fire SchoolIt is ConocoPhillips' philosophy that all accidents are preventable. Focusing on safe behavior is a key to preventing accidents and improving our safety initiatives, which is why ConocoPhillips develops programs that emphasize personal responsibility and empower our employees to promote a safe culture. Our programs not only focus on improving safe practices - they strive to make safety a top priority for every employee and to eliminate all unsafe incidents.

The Journey to Zero
At ConocoPhillips, no job is so important that our employees cannot take the time to do it safely. With this in mind, our exploration and production operations have created a program called "Journey to Zero," which aims to improve safety performance by promoting safety leadership at all levels of the organization. The program's goal is to have zero injuries, illnesses and incidents in our workplaces, homes and communities. As part of this continuous improvement program, ConocoPhillips distributes surveys to employees around the world to evaluate the company's global safety performance. The results of the surveys are used to develop company-wide safety improvement strategies.

Voluntary Protection Program
ConocoPhillips is a strong supporter of the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety & Health Administration Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) in the United States. The program distinguishes worksites that achieve exemplary occupational safety and health standards. Several of our refineries have achieved VPP 'Star' recognition for addressing unique safety and health issues. Exploration and production is also participating in the VPP process.

Facilities that have received star status include ConocoPhillips' Sweeny and Wood River Refineries; Bartlesville Downtown Facilities and Technology Center; San Juan Gas Plant, Wingate Fractionator Plant and Gulf Coast Lubricants Plant; North Cook Inlet Unit and Beluga River Unit; South Texas Asset; and Grater Kuparuk Area.

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Excellence
Our HSE Excellence Process enables our businesses to further identify and eliminate work hazards and risks. The process, which involves all levels of the organization, includes an assessment tool that helps manage every stage of the HSE excellence process, from communicating values, policies and standards to measuring current performance and identifying opportunities. At least once a year, all business units review their management systems against corporate HSE standards as well as the key elements of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety & Health Administration Voluntary Protection Program. This process helps ConocoPhillips make continuous safety improvements and ultimately achieve the highest standards of HSE excellence.

ConocoPhillips Emergency Response TeamEmergency Response Training
Part of ConocoPhillips' commitment to safety includes preparing our employees, contractors and communities to respond to operational emergencies. We prepare for emergencies by implementing our integrated global emergency response procedure that includes regular training, equipment maintenance and review of procedures. We strive to create safe communities by inviting local citizens and members of regulatory agencies to observe and participate in training events involving oil spill recovery, fire-fighting and first aid drills.

Fire Safety House
ConocoPhillips' concern for safety extends beyond its operations. In several of the company's businesses, employees have developed programs to educate the community on safety, such as the Fire Safety House, which has traveled more than 100,000 miles and has taught more than one million schoolchildren across the United States how to protect themselves and their families from fire.
