Social Responsibility

Safety and Social Services

ConocoPhillips takes responsibility for the safety of employees and the community. By sponsoring worldwide safety programs, supporting health organizations and funding social service initiatives, the company strives to promote safety in all the communities in which we operate.

Social Services

About half the company’s donations to social service organizations are channeled through the United Way to strengthen communities worldwide. The remaining funds are contributed directly to the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, community centers and other service organizations. The following are some of the company’s social services initiatives.

Clean Water
In developing countries, efforts are directed toward such fundamental needs as helping to provide communities with clean running water and teaching healthy hygiene. In Southeast Asia, ConocoPhillips partnered with WorldVision to construct two hydraulic water pumps in rural communities near Dili, Timor-Leste. The pumps will assist 1,650 people in the villages of Ferik-Katuas and Laulara by improving hygiene and local agriculture, which by increasing access to food improves nutrition.

In Venezuela, ConocoPhillips helped the people of Pedernales and Capure create a civil association to provide a clean water treatment and distribution system for their communities, replacing their reliance on rain for drinking water. On Matak Island, Indonesia, the company found a local lack of knowledge among the community about public health issues, with garbage disposed on the beach and in the sea. ConocoPhillips worked with community leaders to promote health awareness and formulate rules and systems to help the community manage its waste properly.

Cancer Support
Because one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, ConocoPhillips is involved with several organizations aimed at helping cancer patients and funding cancer research. In 2003, the company became the first corporate sponsor for CanCare, an organization that provides one-on-one long-term emotional support for cancer patients and their family members. In addition to its financial contribution, ConocoPhillips has employees who serve as CanCare volunteers by providing support to employees newly diagnosed with cancer and to managers and workgroups when an employee is affected by cancer.

ConocoPhillips also contributes over $100,000 annually to several cancer-related organizations including the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the MD Anderson Shooting Down Cancer event and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. In addition to a $2 million contribution to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2005, ConocoPhillips committed $1 million to the University of Texas Health Science Center in 2006.

Life-Saving Missions
Houston’s Memorial Hermann Life Flight helicopter fleet dispatches more than 3,000 life-saving missions each year to transport trauma patients to hospitals. The fleet consists of four helicopters but with Houston’s rapidly growing population, Life Flight is unable to respond to every call, leaving around 100 calls unanswered each year. ConocoPhillips hopes to change this.

In 2007, the company contributed $1 million to Life Flight. This donation will go toward the purchase of six new helicopters that will provide enhanced emergency care to the community. With the new fleet of helicopters, Life Flight anticipates being able to improve response time from an average of 45 to 30 minutes. Partially funded by ConocoPhillips, the new helicopters will be faster, technologically superior, and can transmit video and EKG information to the hospital so doctors on the ground know what to expect or can make a diagnosis before the helicopter lands.

Flights for Life
In 2006, ConocoPhillips sponsored seats for community non-profit volunteers on chartered flights in East Timor. By sponsoring these seats, the company enabled numerous volunteers to assist in areas throughout the East Timor community. ConocoPhillips also participates in the Corporate Angel Network in the United States, which allows cancer patients to fly free-of-charge on corporate jets.

Safety

Safety plays a key role in all of ConocoPhillips’ operations. However, the company’s dedication to health and safety extends to protecting and improving the lives of citizens around the world. By sharing knowledge, time and monetary support, ConocoPhillips is able to help save and rebuild lives throughout the communities in which we operate. Programs are sponsored and organized that promote healthy living, grant access to basic human needs, encourage safe practices and aid families and communities in times of crisis.

One of the many ways our employees have reached out to educate local communities about safety is through the Fire Safety House. The safety house has traveled more than 100,000 miles and taught more than one million children across the United States how to protect themselves and their families from a fire.

In the North Sea, ConocoPhillips supplied 1,100 reflective vests to children at local day-care centers. The vests help keep children safe and visible on their way home from the day-care facilities. In Thailand, ConocoPhillips’ retail marketing business unit worked in conjunction with the local government to implement a helmet giveaway program during 2006. The program addressed safe riding awareness for children and their parents and helped reduce motorcycle accidents and injuries.

Promoting Farm Safety for Children
In many instances, employees have developed programs to educate local communities on safety. Each year, more than 33,000 children who live on, work on or visit a farm are injured. ConocoPhillips contributes to the Progressive Agriculture to help promote safe practices and reduce the number of children injured on farms. The company's contributions help sponsor day-long camps aimed at teaching children the proper safety techniques to use with agricultural chemicals, machinery, livestock and other animals, first aid, electrical hazards, water safety and firearm safety.

Health and Safety Fairs
Many of the company’s businesses hold regular events to share their health and safety knowledge with the public. At the Sweeny refinery in Texas, an annual Health and Safety Fair offering free health checks and medical services to the local community is organized. More than 500 people attended the 2006 event.

Reducing the Stigma of HIV/AIDS
The stigma of HIV/AIDS has negative impacts on people worldwide. To help reduce this stigma, ConocoPhillips’ Nigerian Business Unit worked in partnership with the Nigerian Business Coalition Against AIDS to conduct an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign among its workforce with the theme In Unity We Mitigate Stigma. The awareness program included presentations on HIV/AIDS from ConocoPhillips, the Nigerian Business Coalition Against AIDS and people living with disease.
