Membership Information
The Bayway Complex Community Panel (CAP) is hosted by member companies that have facilities at the site: ConocoPhillips; Infineum, a joint venture between ExxonMobil and Shell; Cogen Technologies - Goldman Sachs; and a new member, Du Pont, that is building a facility in the complex. Approximately ten company representatives attend CAP meetings.

The Bayway Complex CAP also includes approximately 25 community members who represent a cross-section of people who live, work or are otherwise associated with local communities near the complex. They include, but are not limited to: Linden, N.J.; Rahway, N.J.; Elizabeth, N.J.; and Staten Island, N.Y. While most CAP members are volunteers, certain elected officials are members due to their positions.

CAP members should have an interest in plant operations and related topics and be associated with or represent one or more of the following sectors: Civic Groups, Education, Emergency Response, Environment, Health Care, Merchants/Business, Municipal Government, Neighbors or Senior Citizens.

Long Term Goal
The meeting goal is promote a better understanding of the companies and their facilities within the broader population by maintaining an open dialogue with CAP members who represent the ever-changing communities.

Objectives
  • To address health, safety, environmental, educational and civic concerns, as well as perceptions and expectations from a wide range of viewpoints.
  • To allow company representatives to disseminate factual information to community members and encourage open discussion of these topics.
  • To discuss key operational issues involving the chemical plant, cogeneration plant and refinery.
  • To discuss and make recommendations on controversial matters.

CAP Facilitator
Mary Purves, who also serves as the Chair of the City of Linden's Environmental Commission, is the CAP Facilitator. The Vice-Chair is Carol Saavona, the Science Department Head for the Board of Education, in the city of Elizabeth.

Meeting Schedule
Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 8 p.m., with the exception of July, August, November and December. Average attendance at each meeting is 30 people.

Did you know?
  • Bayway refinery was built in 1908 by John D. Rockerfeller and the first crude "still" was fired up on January 2, 1909. 
  • Bayway is the second largest refinery on the East Coast and the fifteenth largest in the U.S.
  • If all of Bayway's gasoline production was marketed in N.J., it would supply more than one of every two gallons sold in the state everyday.
