Civic Programs and the Arts

ConocoPhillips’ goal is to participate in and support activities that improve the quality of life for people living in the communities in which the company operates.

Civic Programs

In support of Alaska's traditional whaling culture, ConocoPhillips provided funding to both the International Whaling Conference and the activities of the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission. Other cultural projects supported include housing for native elders; funding for sinew sewers who repair skin whaling boats; dancing and drumming performances; and the traditional Kivgiq and Nalukataq gatherings. Also In Alaska the Kivgiq festival, a traditional Inupiat celebration held by the outlying villages of the North Slope to celebrate a successful whaling season, is funded. The company also sponsors the Morris Thompson Center, created to honor one of Alaska’s prominent native leaders.

Additionally ConocoPhillips supports InFOCUS (Interprofessional Fostering of Ophthalmic Care for Underserved Sectors), an organization devoted to preventing and treating blindness in areas where risk is the greatest. InFOCUS trains primary eye-care providers in developing countries and promotes low-cost technologies, products and procedures to bring eye care to those without access. Worldwide, 35 million people suffer from blindness that is either preventable or treatable. Studies show the leading cause of blindness is uncorrected visual refractive error, the lack of eyeglasses. In 2005, ConocoPhillips’ contribution to InFOCUS helped bring eye care, including 450 pairs of new prescription eyeglasses for schoolchildren, to the Bohai Bay area of China, where myopia (nearsightedness) is especially prevalent.

The Arts

Museum grand openingArts and cultural programs stimulate creative thought, promote self-expression and foster new ideas. ConocoPhillips believes these are valuable experiences that should be shared by people around the world. By sponsoring symphonies, building museums and funding cultural, music and art education programs, we participate in a variety of projects that support the arts and celebrate cultural history and diversity.

Since 1999, the company has worked with the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo to present an annual music award, which allows graduating students to further their professional development and specialization. Winner of the 2007 award was saxophonist Ole-Henrik Mohn Pettersen.

For many years, the company has contributed annually to the Oklahoma Fall Arts Institute, providing funding for teachers statewide to attend special arts classes to enhance their teaching skills. Company funding also extends to the Summer Art Institute which fosters artistic talents in students ages 14-18. Students may select from classes in acting, photography, dance, music, visual arts, writing and film or video studies.

ConocoPhillips also supports many museums, foundations and exhibits worldwide, including the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow; the Farmington Museum in New Mexico; and the National Oil Museum in Stavanger. In our company headquarters, ConocoPhillips contributes over $600,000 to support Houston’s symphony, ballet, opera, museums, and theatre agencies. ConocoPhillips underwrites family productions, supports educational programs, and provides transportation programs to offer local youth the opportunity to attend theatre productions.
Museums
In 2007, ConocoPhillips revealed two new museums in Oklahoma that celebrate the company’s unique history.
