ConocoPhillips and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project hosted their seventh energy education workshop in Lake Charles, La. on April 22.

63 teachers from the Lake Charles area participated in the one-day workshop that supplied them with energy information, curriculum materials and science kits to pass on to their students and fellow educators.

Carol Collins, director of public affairs for ConocoPhillips Lake Charles refinery, welcomed teachers and talked with them about the company’s local operations. The teachers spent the remainder of the day with trainers from NEED, learning how to incorporate energy into their classroom through interactive science experiments and games such as Energy Enigma and Energy Bingo.

Feedback from the teachers included that all of the information presented is useful to all teachers today, even those outside the science discipline. Attendees remarked that they were impressed with how much they learned about the many ways they can teach about energy in the classroom.

“I am overwhelmed with the classroom material and cannot wait to use them.  I would also like to use them for my community service project,” said Cheryl Kibodeaux, a high school environmental science teacher.

ConocoPhillips will host a total of 24 energy workshops across the United States during 2008.
