JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS
ConocoPhillips and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project hosted their Jackson, Miss. energy education workshop on May 5 at the Jackson Marriott.
More than 50 K-12 teachers from Jackson and surrounding communities participated in the one-day workshop that supplied them with energy information, curriculum materials and science kits to pass on to their students and fellow educators.
Anna Kaplan from ConocoPhillips’ corporate headquarters welcomed teachers and provided an overview of the company’s operations. Attendees spend the remainder of the day with facilitators Melanie Harper from NEED and Lisa Jackson from the Mississippi Development Authority learning how they can incorporate energy into their classroom through interactive science experiments and games. Participants learned about energy issues through lessons and experiments available in the energy kits that they will receive for use in their classrooms, such as an energy transformation activity using a turbine and a thermal energy experiment.
Teachers welcomed the opportunity to learn more about energy and looked forward to passing the knowledge to their students through curriculum that is correlated to Mississippi’s standards.
ConocoPhillips will host a total of 24 energy workshops across the United States during 2008.
