ConocoPhillips Energy Education Program

Energy is our business. It’s what we do best. However, there are energy challenges facing the world today - like conservation, discovering and developing alternative energy sources, and preserving our environmeneducational workshopt - that we can’t tackle alone. ConocoPhillips wants to help America’s youth understand these challenges and the importance of using energy wisely so they can become part of the solution.

As a part of its 2008 outreach activities, ConocoPhillips is pleased to partner with the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project to provide America’s teachers – and ultimately students – with training and resources on key energy topics. The partnership is designed to equip teachers with tools and information that they can incorporate into daily classroom activities to improve their students’ energy knowledge. By fostering energy education and beginning a dialogue in classrooms across the United States, ConocoPhillips hopes to instill in the country’s youth not only a desire to learn, but also a desire to be proactive about energy issues.

In 2006, we launched a Conversation on Energy to address energy challenges and provide an opportunity for communities around America to discuss solutions. Feedback from these meetings consistently showed that, like ConocoPhillips, the public believes solutions to several long-term energy issues cannot be attained without a heightened energy awareness among today’s youth. We’ve built on this knowledge to develop an educational outreach program designed to improve energy education in classrooms across the United States.

On January 31, 2008, ConocoPhillips and NEED began one-day energy classroom workshops for K-12 teachers in 24 cities across 15 states. The launch took place in Golden, Colo.

The purpose of these energy workshops is to:
  • Create awareness in America’s classrooms of today’s energy challenges and the importance of using energy wisely.
  • Provide teachers with tools about the science of energy, energy sources and energy efficiency, among other topics.
  • Supplement educators’ training with professional development and provide them with resources they can use in their classrooms, such as standards-based, grade-appropriate energy curriculum sets and hands-on student kits.
In addition to classroom workshops, ConocoPhillips will sponsor training opportunities for educators through workshops at national and regional educator conferences throughout 2008.

ConocoPhillips and NEED are working together to make energy education available in the classroom, thus encouraging students to grow and expand their knowledge of energy science and usage. The program is a commitment to student learning, energy education and energy supply for future generations.
