houston, Texas Workshop Highlights
ConocoPhillips and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project hosted their third energy education workshop in Houston, Texas on April 1, at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. T his was the first of two 2008 workshops that will be held in Houston, where the company is headquartered.
Approximately 70 teachers from the Houston and Katy areas were provided with hands-on science training through interactive experiments, games and activities to help improve their students’ energy knowledge. Attendees left with curriculum guides, hands-on science of energy kits and awareness of energy issues to incorporate into their classrooms.
“As teachers, our resources can be limited, especially in our energy curriculum, so we are extremely thankful to ConocoPhillips for providing this information for us,” said Kerri Shaw, a K-12 gifted and talented science teacher from Katy, Texas.
Lou Burke, manager of biofuels for ConocoPhillips, gave a presentation on how securing our energy future through energy diversification, efficiency, innovation and environmental responsibility. He shared how the company has increased its research and development activities in technologies that complement existing businesses while providing strong growth opportuni ties in energy alternatives.
Teachers also experienced docent-led tours of the museum’s Wiess Energy Hall, where they learned about the application of scientific concepts and advanced technology in the oil and gas industry.
ConocoPhillips will host a total of 24 energy workshops across the United Stated during 2008.
