Golden, Colorado Workshop Highlights
Golden, Colo. was the first of 24 stops for ConocoPhillips’ educational outreach program designed to provide teachers with key energy i nformation that they can pass on to their students. More than 50 Colorado teachers traveled to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory from across the state in late January to explore how energy is transformed from one form to another, discover innovative methods to conserve energy, and learn about the science behind energy.
The day began with a discussion between ConocoPhillips Land Supervisor Kurt Froistad and the teachers about ConocoPhillips’ local operations and educational opportunities. K-12 teachers then tested their energy knowledge and met other educators through an interactive game of Energy Bingo. As the day progressed, teachers watched NEED instructors demonstrate classroom energy exercises and played Energy Enigma, a game that challenged the teachers to learn about different forms of energy in a short period of time.
The day’s most popular activity came when teachers used the Science of Energy Kits designed to teach students about different forms of energy. The kits provided teachers with classroom exercises that explore energy by using balloons, radiometers, light bulbs, solar panels and many other items.
Teachers who attended the workshop left with Science of Energy Kits, energy curriculum guides and student energy information books that will help improve their s tudents’ knowledge about key energy topics. In addition to passing on the energy information to students, teachers also noted that they would share the materials with science teachers who were unable to attend the workshop.
ConocoPhillips will host 23 additional workshops across the United Stated during 2008.
