Ames Workshop

AMES, IOWA WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS

ConocoPhillips and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project hosted their thirteenth energy education workshop in Ames, Iowa on May 28.

The workshop highlighted the fact that energy is no longer taught exclusively by science teachers. A Spanish teacher attended to improve his energy knowledge so he can teach an energy course in the fall. A social studies teacher attended to help transition into her new teaching role. A math teacher found new ways to teach math concepts through energy experiments. In all, thirty-one teachers from across the state came to the workshop to learn more about different sources and forms of energy.

By providing Iowa teachers with training and curriculum materials on both conventional and emerging energy sources, the workshop enabled teachers to begin a dialogue about energy and its future challenges with their students.

The workshop took place at Iowa State University, where ConocoPhillips has established an eight-year, $22.5 million biofuels research program to further diversify America’s sources of energy and help meet the growing energy demand. In its inaugural year, the research program supported 14 research projects, including research about biofuel production technologies, production of crops for conversion to biofuels, and the harvest, storage and transportation of biomass.

ConocoPhillips will host a total of 24 energy workshops across the United States during 2008.
