Columbia on Energy

The Palmetto State was the setting for a conversation about the state’s and nation’s energy future on Wednesday, June 27. Hosted by ConocoPhillips and the University of South Carolina Office of Research and Health Sciences, more than 275 residents from Columbia and surrounding areas shared their views on energy issues and listened to a panel of experts as a part of the Conversation on Energy Columbia. Representatives from more than 20 business and community organizations, including the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, South Carolina Technology Alliance, Palmetto State Clean Fuels Coalition, and the South Carolina Biomass Council also participated as partners in the town hall meeting.

In addition to two panelists representing ConocoPhillips – Jim Gallogly, executive vice president of Refining, Marketing and Transportation, and Sabrina Watkins, manager of Environmental Technology – representatives from local and statewide organizations were invited to serve on the panel and share their perspectives on energy. The panelists included Erika Hartwig, renewable energy coordinator,
South Carolina Energy Office; John Litton, P.E., assistant chief for the Bureau of Air Quality, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control; and James C. Rogers, P.E., leader of New Carolina’s Apparel, Automotive, Nuclear and Textile Clusters. The meeting was moderated by Charles Bierbauer, dean of the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, University of South Carolina.
