Texas Children’s Hospital Announces $3 Million Gift from ConocoPhillips

HOUSTON, May 15, 2008 --- Texas Children’s Hospital today announced a $3 million gift from ConocoPhillips in support of two of the hospital’s Vision 2010 initiatives: its new West Campus, Houston’s first community children’s hospital and one of the nation’s largest suburban pediatric hospitals; and the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute, the nation’s first facility designed to use multidisciplinary research to study pediatric brain disorders. ConocoPhillips has designated $1.5 million of the gift for each initiative.
Mark A. Wallace, president and chief executive officer of Texas Children’s Hospital, announced the donation today during the groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new West Campus. Jim Mulva, chairman and chief executive officer of ConocoPhillips, also participated in the program which was attended by Texas Children’s board members, community supporters and some area families whose children are former hospital patients.

Mulva spoke on behalf of ConocoPhillips about the company’s support of Texas Children’s initiatives.

Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus is designed to serve the greater West Houston community as a premier pediatric treatment facility and a community resource center for child wellness and healing. Designed to incorporate the best practices in pediatric treatment environments for outpatient and inpatient care, the facilities will include an outpatient building with offices for physicians offering 15 pediatric specialty services; the area’s only 24/7 pediatric emergency room; intermediate and acute care inpatient beds; surgical suites; and advanced imaging services. Located at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Barker Cypress, the new West Campus will serve one of the nation’s fastest growing populations of children, the area from Sugar Land to Bryan-College Station. The area’s pediatric population is projected to grow by 51% by 2015. The West Campus facilities will total 490,000 square feet and will be built in two phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion in spring/summer 2010.
A new model of excellence, the Jan and Dan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital will use a multidisciplinary research approach to rapidly accelerate the search for treatments to neurological disorders. The 340,000-square-foot facility will be home to more than 170 researchers who will bring new promise to those afflicted with neurological diseases including autism, epilepsy, Rett syndrome, cerebral palsy and learning disorders. Worldwide, one billion people including 300 million children suffer from some form of the more than 600 disorders that afflict the nervous system. In the United States, 50 million children and adults, more than the number of Americans with heart disease or cancer combined, are affected by a neurological or neurodevelopmentally handicapping condition. The facility is scheduled for completion in 2010.
