ConocoPhillips Signs License with Engen Petroleum for Alkylation Technologies
This is news concerning ConocoPhillips but issued by a ConocoPhillips business unit, Technology and Major Products, and is posted here for informational purposes.
HOUSTON, May 25, 2006 – ConocoPhillips Company [NYSE:COP] today announced a license agreement with Engen Petroleum Ltd. for the installation of its proprietary Split Olefin Feed Technology (SOFT™) and Reduced Volatility Alkylation Process (ReVAP™) at Engen’s refinery in Durban, South Africa. The technologies will significantly enhance the refinery’s octane capabilities while also reducing the risk to the neighboring community to well below current levels. The installation is slated for completion in 2008.
“Engen Refinery was among the first facilities worldwide to install a Rapid Dump System and it has fulfilled our expectations,” said Wayne Hartmann, general manager, Engen Refinery. “We are expecting a similar outcome with these technologies.”
SOFT technology is designed to maximize product yield and octane, while expanding capacity and increasing alkylate quality with minimal capital investment. The ReVAP process significantly reduces the volatility of the hydrofluoric acid (HF) catalyst and improves unit safety levels by up to 90 percent. Already installed at the Durban refinery’s alkylation unit is ConocoPhillips’ Inventory Management Process (IMP), a one-touch mitigation system allowing for the rapid transfer of the catalyst inventory to a dedicated receiver vessel.
“Refiners are continually assessing new and different technologies to improve the overall safety and reliability of their operations,” said Kevin Fabry, manager, Products & Licensing, Technology Solutions Division, ConocoPhillips. “The addition of our SOFT and ReVAP technologies will, respectively, work to maximize product yield and octane, while further mitigating the potential risks associated with HF catalyst.”
With more than 60 years of experience in the safe operation and maintenance of its alkylation process, ConocoPhillips is the number one licensor of HF alkylation technology. The company has more than 140 licenses worldwide with a combined daily operating capacity of 620,000 barrels of alkylate.
