Give yourself the edge. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. In an interview situation, spontaneity is always refreshing. But there’s no substitute for being prepared. The more you are, the more confidence you’ll project, which can only increase your chances for landing the job. Here are a few tips to help you come out shining:
- Your school's career center most likely has information on successful interviewing techniques. Preview their lists of questions. Think through your responses. And then verbalize them to enhance your communications skills. Maybe ask a friend or family member to do a little role-playing.
- Do your homework. Study our Web site to learn about ConocoPhillips and recent news in the industry. Taking the time to do this basic research reflects your interest and commitment. That always manages to impress.
- Have a few examples in your back pocket that demonstrate problem solving skills. And expect to answer questions about your course work, your role on projects and prior work experience.
A few to-do's: Just some extra pointers that may seem obvious, but it never hurts to repeat.
- Be punctual. It’s a fundamental sign of respect and will start the interview out on the right foot. Even better, arrive 10 minutes early. This will give you a chance to review your notes, calm any jitters, and grab a glass of water – which is perfectly acceptable to bring into the interview.
- Ask questions. Interviews are a two-way street. We enjoy being asked questions that show genuine interest about the company.
- Be buttoned up. Pack extra resumes, pens and a tablet for notes.
- Speaking of buttons. Dressing appropriately has a way of affecting your confidence. And makes a better first impression.
And finally:
- Send (or e-mail) a thank you note. All candidates being equal, expressing your heartfelt appreciation to the recruiter or interviewer for taking the time to meet with you just might tip the scales in your favor.
Good luck!
