Exploration and Production ConocoPhillips holds a significant acreage position in the Timor Sea Joint Petroleum Development Area (JPDA) between Timor-Leste and Australia, the site of the company’s major Bayu-Undan Development. The company’s other operations in the region are located offshore Western Australia and offshore and onshore Australia’s Northern Territory.
ConocoPhillips is operator of the Bayu-Undan gas condensate field located within the Timor Sea JPDA. The field, discovered in 1995, has been developed in two phases. Phase I included a natural gas recycle project, in which condensate and natural gas liquids were separated and removed for sale, and dry natural gas was reinjected back into the reservoir until phase II (Darwin LNG) was ready to receive the hydrocarbons. Production from the first phase began in February 2004. Phase II of the development involved the installation of a natural gas pipeline from the field to Darwin, Australia, and construction of an LNG liquefaction facility located at Wickham Point, Darwin.
ConocoPhillips’ other operations in the region include the Athena (WA-17-L) and Elang/Kakatua/Kakatua North (EKKN) fields. The Athena field is located offshore Western Australia and is part of a field which straddles the boundary with Perseus, an adjoining license area. It has produced natural gas since 2001.The Elang/Kakatua/Kakatua North fields are located within production-sharing contract area 03-12 within the Timor Sea JPDA and have been producing ultra-light crude oil since 1998.
Australia Facilities ConocoPhillips is operator of the Darwin LNG liquefaction facility located at Wickham Point, Darwin. It was completed and began full operation in 2006 using production from the Bayu-Undan field. The facility is expected to meet gross contracted sales of up to 3 million tons of LNG per year for a period of 17 years to customers in Japan, including The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd.
Australia and Timor-Leste Exploration and Business Development ConocoPhillips holds an interest in the Greater Sunrise field. In early 2007, the International Unitisation Agreement and the Treaty on Certain Maritime Arrangements in the Timor Sea were ratified by the Timor-Leste and Australian parliaments and incorporated into the laws of the respective countries. ConocoPhillips and its co-venturers are continuing to evaluate commercial development options and the successful marketing of the natural gas and condensate from the Sunrise field.
ConocoPhillips is operator of the Caldita/Barossa exploration structures. The NT/P 61 permit is located offshore Northern Territory Australia, in the Timor Sea approximately 165 miles north-northwest of Darwin. The NT/P 69 permit adjoins the northern boundary of NT/P 61. Drilling of the Caldita-2 well in NTP/61 commenced in early December 2006, located four miles west-northwest of the Caldita-1 discovery well (drilled in 2005). As of year-end 2006, drilling continued. The Barossa-1 exploration well, in NTP/69, commenced in July 2006 and was drilled to a total depth of 14,140 feet. Logging and two drill stem tests confirmed the presence of natural gas. Barossa-1 was plugged and abandoned as planned. A 3-D seismic survey over the Caldita/Barossa structures commenced in December and continued into 2007. Technical evaluation to assess further appraisal and development of the Caldita/Barossa structures will continue to define the size and quality of the natural gas accumulation.
ConocoPhillips is operator of JPDA (03-12), a production-sharing contract area located within the JPDA PSC 03-12 in the Timor Sea. The company also is operator of WA-341-P, WA-343-P, WA-344-P areas. ConocoPhillips purchased this acreage in March 2006. The area covered by these licenses is located in Australia’s western sector of the Timor Sea. Further activity in the area includes reprocessing of 3-D seismic data, which currently is under way. In addition, the company is operator of WA-314-P and WA-315-P and farmed into these permits in October 2006. The permits are located in the Browse basin, offshore Western Australia. ConocoPhillips has the option to increase its interest in the permits to 60 percent. Exploration activities will continue, with one well to be drilled in each of the permits.
