Minimize Environmental Impact

Minimize Environmental ImpactWhat we said

  • We will understand local water management needs through assessments and develop plans to address freshwater scarcity.
  • We will review specific processes and procedures on evaluating biodiversity in the project development process.
  • We will continue implementation of our corporate Climate Change Action Plan, including assessing business-specific actions.

WHAT WE DID

    • Developed corporate fresh water strategy that included specific commitments, focus on priority assets, establishing best practices and developing technologies.
    • Completed freshwater supply risk assessments of major assets using the WBCSD Global Water Tool and, where appropriate, a modified GEMI Local Water Tool process.
    • Opened a Global Water Sustainability Center in Qatar to develop innovative, cost-effective technologies for water treatment.
    • Conducted an internal and external biodiversity benchmark and updated the Sustainable Development Standard.
    • Focused on business unit planning, integration into long-range planning and major project development, carbon trading and engagement in policy development.

WHAT WE PLAN TO DO

    • Review and implement site strategies and action plans globally based on internal evaluations and prioritization.
    • Explore taking treated municipal wastewater as alternative supply, where economically feasible.
    • Investigate and implement new technologies that will reduce the amount of non-saline water used to drill and complete oil and gas wells.
    • Enhance the Sustainable Development Scorecard to include a self assessment tool for biodiversity review.
    • Review corporate strategy and create an action plan for biodiversity.
