At ConocoPhillips, we aspire to create communities in which citizens are safe, healthy, educated, economically stable and environmentally conscious.
Community Partnerships and Sponsorships
ConocoPhillips is an active contributor to Norwegian society, maintaining strong links within the community, both locally and nationally. Our various cultural, sports and youth work sponsorship agreements reflect our continued commitment to community development.
ConocoPhillips has been the main sponsor of the Beach Volleyball World Tour in Stavanger since it began in 1999. We are also the main sponsor of the Havoern athletics club in Tananger.
ConocoPhillips has a longstanding sponsorship agreement with the Norwegian Academy of Music, where a scholarship is granted annually to successful graduating students. We also sponsor a wide range of events and venues, including providing the main sponsorship for the Nordland Musikkfestuke and the Rogaland Theatre in Stavanger.
ConocoPhillips also makes a considerable contribution to the exchange programme between Tananger junior high school and a corresponding school in Teesside, England, Click here to read more about ConocoPhillips’ community partnerships.
Community Safety Initiatives
As well as global safety programmes, our businesses develop safety training tailored to local needs, and share their ideas within the company and externally.
The North Sea business unit exceeded its year-on-year safety target by developing a set of fundamental safety rules, sharing knowledge through twice-yearly safety conferences, working with contractors to develop zero-injury strategies and developing awareness campaigns.
Nurturing Arts
ConocoPhillips is one of the principal sponsors of Aberdeen International Youth Festival (AIYF), which takes place in the city each August. With up to 1,000 participants and over 70 events during the two-week period, the AIYF brings together young performers and artists from all over the world. A dance summer school, traditional music school and an opera garden were some of the offerings in the 2007 event. The festival is one of the highlights of Aberdeen’s cultural calendar and is the major summer arts event in the North East of Scotland.
Inspiring Innovation
ConocoPhillips sponsors the St Andrews Prize for the Environment, an annual competition conducted in conjunction with the University of St Andrews in Scotland. The project encourages development of practical, original and sustainable solutions to environmental challenges worldwide.
The award recognises significant contributions to environmental conservation. Since its launch in 1998 it has attracted entries from throughout the world on diverse topics including sustainable development in the Amazon rainforest, urban regeneration, recycling, health and water issues and renewable energy.
Submissions for the prize are assessed by a panel of eminent trustees representing science, industry and government. The first prize goes to the project displaying the best combination of good science, economic realism and political acceptability.
The 2007 winner was an innovative project to provide sustainable lighting and a new source of income for poor coconut farmers in remote, mountainous areas of the Philippines. The project generates clean electricity from water power to recharge batteries and light the homes of the farmers, who trade coconut husk fibres for the service. The fibres are sold for use in environmental projects such as erosion control and the protection of tree saplings, and income from the fibre sales is re-invested in the project.
The runners-up in 2007 were projects which use solar energy and seawater to cultivate crops in hot, dry coastal regions; and a project which uses satellite images to support conservation initiatives in developing countries.
