About Jobs

The issue of 'green jobs' is a complicated one. Undoubtedly, new jobs will be created as new industries develop and expand. What is not as clear is how many of these will be net 'new' jobs and not just the transfer of a job lost in one industry to a job created in another.

The economic models that are capable of looking at 'net' employment have not yet produced a case in which 'net' employment has increased as a result of climate change legislation. The Energy Information Agency (the data arm of the U.S. government’s Department of Energy) recently updated their modeling of the House bill and, in the 12 cases that they looked at, estimated that, in 2030 (when the full effects of the policy will start to be felt), there would be from 400,000 to 3,200,000 fewer jobs than there would be with no climate change policy.
